Omaha Confuses Me

Omaha is one of the most confusing poker games to a lot of people out there, especially the ones that are used to playing Texas Hold’em. If you just go into the game with the fact in your head that there is a difference between Omaha and Hold’em then you shouldn’t have a problem. The biggest mistake that people make is that they assume that the only difference between the two is that you get two more cards in Omaha. That isn’t at all true; there are a lot of differences in the game that can become very confusing if you are not careful.

In Omaha each player is dealt four cards, and then five are dealt to the community face up. The betting structures and all of that are the same as Texas Hold’em. In regular Omaha the player with the best five card hand wins the pot. In Omaha 8 or Omaha Hi Lo the player with the best five card hand will win half of the pot while the player with the lowest hand (all cards must be 8 or lower) will win the other half of the pot.

No matter what Omaha game it is, there is one very important rule to remember. In Texas Hold’em you can use both of your cards to make the best hand or you can use just one of your cards. Sometimes you might not even use any of them because you will be playing the board. That is the biggest difference between Hold’em and Omaha. In Omaha you must use two cards and even though you have four in your hand you cannot use anymore then two cards.

Example:

Your Hand – J (d) K(h) 4(d) A(s)

The Board Reads 2 (d) 9(d) 4(h) Q(d) 9(h)

As you can see there are three diamonds on the board. You have two diamonds in your hand so you would have a flush.

Example 2:

You have the same hand but in his example the board reads:

2 (s) 9(s) 4(s) Q(d) 10(s)

In this example there are four spades on the board and you have an Ace of Spades. Now, in Hold’em that would be the nut flush. In Omaha however, you do not have a flush at all because in order to have a flush you must use two cards to make the flush. If you had another spade it would be a flush. Just remember you can only use two cards and you must use two cards; no more and no less.

Besides that big confusion the rest of the game is pretty much the same as Hold’em. When you get into Omaha Hi Lo there is a lot of differences, but that is another subject matter. Omaha can be very confusing but once you get the hang of it, there is a lot less confusion. It is one of the more fun and interesting poker games played in casinos. There are a lot of fish in Omaha, and with the right strategies you can make a killing playing the game.
