Omaha Variations
by referralcodefulltilt ~ February 10th, 2009. Filed under: Poker Strategy. There are a lot of poker games that you can choose from when you are venturing into the poker world. Most great poker players are pretty good at all of the different games. One of the more popular poker games is a game called Omaha. Even after you choose a poker game to play, there are still other variations to each game. There are different styles of Omaha and different limits; all of which have a big impact on the Omaha strategy.
There are two basic games of Omaha that you can play. One of them is just Omaha, which awards the pot to the player with only the highest hand. The other game is called Omaha 8 or Omaha hi lo, and this game awards half of the pot to the high hand and the other half of the pot to the low hand. The hardest part about learning the game is learning the differences in the variations.
Then once you figure out which game you are going to play (Omaha or Omaha hi lo) you must figure out the variations of limits and betting you are going to play. There are three basic Omaha games; Omaha Fixed Limit, Omaha Pot Limit and Omaha No Limit. These three variations make the game very interesting and different. They are all played with the same basic rules, but the betting is different and that comes with a different strategy, considering that betting has a lot to do with any poker strategy.
It doesn’t make a difference if it is Omaha or Omaha hi lo. They are two different games, but the betting styles do not chance from one to another. An Omaha Fixed limit game will have the same betting structure as an Omaha hi lo fixed limit game. The betting structures play a large role in how you are going to play Omaha.
The first variation would be Omaha or Omaha hi lo Pot Limit. This basically just means that you can never bet more then what is in the pot. The maximum raise is normally the size of the pot, and it cannot be any bigger then that. Of course, as the pot gets bigger the limits of betting will get bigger.
The next variation of Omaha or Omaha hi lo is Fixed Limit. This means that there is a standard bet that must be bet each round. You cannot bet anymore or any less then what the amount is set to. If the game is Omaha Fixed Limit 5/10 then you can only bet in increments of $5 and $10. For the first two rounds you must bet in increments of $5, and for the next two rounds you must bet in increments of $10.
The last variation of Omaha is No Limit. This one is very simple because there is no set limit of what you can bet. You can bet as much as you want as long as it is at least the size of the big blind. This is not as common of a variation as the other two. The most common is Limit Omaha.
There are many different variations of the two Omaha games, and that is the first thing to learn when you decide to venture off into Omaha. It is a very fun and exciting game, but not knowing the betting structures and differences in the variations can become a problem. Make sure you understand before you start playing and make sure you know what the variation is as well. There is really no such thing as just Omaha; that is too broad of an expression with all of the different variations of the game.
